Randstad has been retained to engage an ABN/independent contractor (structural engineer) across AUS to review a lines design software. The client is looking for an indpendent reviewer for a software review (AS7000) for a global contractor on a lines design program.

Location: Aus Wide Recruit (Project Based)

Are you a Chartered Structural Engineer? I am looking for a talented Structural Engineer (CPEng) for a contract/project basis across Australia (VIC timezone) for an indpendent review on a project of a structural engineeringing software. Tje project involves a comprehensive review and validation of the the program system in relation to the requirements of AS/NZS 7000 – Overhead Line Design.

The primary objective of this engagement is to ensure that the engineering logic, methodologies, and outputs generated by the system complies with applicable standards. The appointed engineer will also provide expert recommendations to address any identified gaps and support alignment with AS/NZS 7000.

About the Software:

The client has a proprietary engineering assessment system. It is designed to evaluate the condition and structural capacity of timber utility poles, supporting asset management and decision-making for overhead line infrastructure.

The system integrates field inspection data with embedded computational algorithms to assess:

  • Structural integrity of timber poles;
  • Remaining Residual Strength;
  • Load-carrying capacity under various loading conditions; and
  • Compliance with engineering design and safety standards.

The software leverages programmed engineering models (implemented in part using C programming language) to simulate structural behaviour and determine whether assets meet required performance criteria. These outputs are used operationally to guide maintenance, replacement, and risk mitigation decisions across utility networks.

Scope of Work

The engaged Structural Engineer will be responsible for the following:

3.1 Compliance Assessment

  • Review underlying algorithms, assumptions, and methodologies.
  • Benchmark system outputs and calculations against the requirements of AS/NZS 7000.
  • Assess whether the software appropriately reflects:
    • Loading conditions and factors;
    • Material properties and degradation assumptions;
    • Structural analysis methods; and
    • Design criteria.

3.2 Testing and Validation

  • Perform independent validation of the outputs using sample datasets and/or controlled test cases.
  • Replicate critical calculations manually or through independent tools to verify accuracy.
  • Identify discrepancies between the softwares outputs and AS/NZS 7000-compliant calculations.

3.3 Recommendations

  • Document any gaps, inconsistencies, or non-compliance issues.
  • Provide clear and actionable recommendations to:
    • Improve algorithm accuracy;
    • Adjust modelling assumptions; and
    • Enhance alignment with AS/NZS 7000.

3.4 Certification and Sign-Off

  • Provide a formal statement or report indicating:
    • Any conditions or limitations associated with compliance; and
    • Whether the system complies with AS/NZS 7000.
  • Support Omexom in achieving a defensible compliance position.
  1. Deliverables

The Structural Engineer will provide:

  • Technical Assessment Report, including:
    • Detailed compliance evaluation;
    • Testing methodology and results; and
    • Identified gaps and risks.
  • Recommendations Report – Required system changes and improvements.
  • Final Compliance Statement – Formal sign-off or conditional compliance position.
  1. Engagement Details
  • Type: Project-based engagement.
  • Work Arrangement: Flexible, no fixed hours; milestone-driven deliverables.
  • Location: Remote or hybrid (as required).

There is potential for ongoing or follow-up work, subject to project outcomes and future system development needs.

  1. Required Qualifications and Experience

Mandatory Requirements

  • Accredited degree in Structural Engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience in structural assessment and design.

Highly Desirable

  • Working knowledge of C programming or ability to interpret algorithm logic would be strongly valued.
  • Working knowledge of AS/NZS 7000 (Overhead Line Design standard).
  • Experience with timber structures or utility pole assessment.
  • Familiarity with engineering software validation and verification

If you are a Structural Engineer with expertise in AS7000, overhead lines experience, and experienced with other line design software, looking to take on a new project, please get in touch.
